The Doherty Library Reference Desk is the first stop for those who need assistance in learning what resources are available and how to use them. Reference Librarians can help you locate information on your research topic, find answers to specific questions, use the online library catalog and electronic databases, as well as direct you to any of the hundreds of dictionaries, encyclopedias, and other reference books shelved in the Reference area.
Library Orientation
Orientation sessions are available by appointment for students, new faculty members, or community patrons. These sessions are designed to acquaint patrons with the physical facility. Contact a Reference Librarian for further information.
Library Instruction
Reference Librarians are available to provide instruction in the classroom, and to groups or individuals in the Library. These sessions are generally related to specific areas of research or specific classes, and are planned with the instructor. The sessions may include hands-on use of reference and electronic resources, one-on-one consultations with students, or lectures on the identification and use of relevant resources. A bibliography of pertinent reference sources is usually provided for the students. Instructors are encouraged to contact the Reference Librarians for more information about instructional services. Individual students may also, on their initiative, arrange for special instruction with the Reference Librarians.
Research Guides
Reference librarians will develop online research guides for specific classes or subject areas. Contact your liaison librarian if you would like to have a guide for your class.
Online Services
The Centre College Library subscribes to over 100 electronic indexes and databases. All databases are available both on-campus and off-campus to students, faculty, and staff. For help in selecting and using one of the databases, contact a Reference Librarian.
Interlibrary Loan
Any Centre College faculty, staff member, or student may request books or journal articles not owned by the library from another library through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Patrons needing ILL materials should contact Fernando Gonzalez, head of Interlibrary Loan. For specific policies for ILL, please see Mr. Gonzalez or any other member of the Library staff. Faculty members and students are encouraged to request ILL materials well in advance of the due date of the paper or project.
